Your actions, and your views mean that people can and will make a judgement
on your credibility. A physical face to face meeting is not necessary. The
one thing that truly would worry me if you were elected is your total lack
of understanding of human relations Chi. I mean for goodness sake, you try
to take over Progsoc and then wonder why people who've put in a lot of time
and effort are defending their positions? If you seriously don't see why, I
think we should all be worried about your ability to lead us. I've been on
the Faculty Board and I can tell you If you adopt this approach with the
people at SOCS you'll be eaten alive and Progsoc will DEFINITELY go off
line - that's not scare tactics - it's FACT.
What you need to have been doing before any attempt of a takeover is
participating in Progsoc, getting to know the people, and getting to know
the way things are run. You need to do all of this BEFORE you can start
suggesting improvements.
Frankly I don't think your intentions are in the least bit directed at the
current membership - you just think that if you go ahead with the takeover
(that is the word that YOU yourself used isn't it??? Or was that message on
Dark Realms misquoted?)that they'll benefit too. The world doesn't work
like that. You need to know what the problems are before you can fix them.
Even if you have the best of intentions, I suggest you take a step back and
think about what you've done and what you are doing. Otherwise whether you
get in or not, we all stand to lose!
You want positive suggestions - ok, how about this, work co-operatively
with the current Progsoc exec to achieve some of the things that you say
you want to achieve this year. Don't waste time, energy and resources (your
own or other people's) trying to "take over" and show us what you can do
with what you have right now! If you could make large significant
improvements to Progsoc when you're not in power, I think you'll find
people who currently oppose you will back you. Guess what though - this is
going to take time and effort to achieve and you won't get the glory of
being in the exec this year, but that shouldn't bother you if you're so
certain. You've kinda shot yourself in the foot by attempting this takeover
at all....if you pursue it you'll lose ALL CREDIBILITY.
Fantastic intentions are not good enough. Technical skills are not good
enough. Relationships and people are the most complex and difficult part of
any organisation to understand. Please think before you act (this includes
speaking, and includes writing to a mailing list as large as this one)
Please note, I've made my point without the use of personally directed
abuse. One problem that's always existed on this mailing list is that
people either don't want to or don't know how to make a point without
getting personal. It can make the mailing list really horrid to deal with.
Let's all control our emotions and have a reasonable debate. You might not
get the laughs you get out of messages where people are put down, but who
knows we may actually get somewhere.
