[History lesson]
It's part of an on-going relationship of warm-and-fuzzies between
ProgSoc and Sun ENS, first established by a ProgSoc founding member
and Sun ENS admin of significant influence, and subsequently
maintained by the ProgSoc members/ENS employees that followed him.
Forever revered be his name in ProgSoc's history: Chris Keane.
[End history lesson]
It has nothing to do with getting "the sun(tm) brandname into more
heads"... Sun already does that with the university, and if they were
really doing it to us don't you think they'd give us more modern
hardware?
Rather, the ENS management has been convinced that assisting ProgSoc in
this way both gives students the ability to explore Sun hardware and
software in ways they would not have had the opportunity to otherwise
(thus furthering their industry), and let the enlightened members know
that ENS are really a nice bunch of guys... even to work with ;)
And in return, we are forever grateful... thank you ENS!!!
As for ENS giving equipment to individuals... I obviously can't speak
for ENS of course, but the arrangement was not a trivial matter: an
individual who wanted to achieve the same (even to benefit a society,
let alone to benefit himself) would have a lot of work ahead of him.
|
| Of course, the likeliest explanation is that you are a most
| generous lot concerned with the welfare of the world.
|
| Try not to take this as criticism of ENS's actions, I'm just
| wondering about why you do these things.
|
| Am I too paranoid?
No... just ignorant of what was involved to make this all possible.
Cheers,
