The Academic Computing Services systems are for students to do work on.
Part of the motd says:
"The Academic Computing facilities are available for use by students in
coursework, assignments and research, and by staff in teaching, research
and administration. Other uses are considered in breach of good order, and
persons detected carrying out such activities will be liable to
disciplinary action under the University By-laws."
Tools, such as xv, are used by ACS staff to determine whether
materials are coursework related or not. In this case, the user is
being investigated by one of the Duty Programmers for being over the
recommended quota. Other tools are used as necessary to investigate
complaints about students that we get from time to time.
