Mail via dial-in

Ahem...
After *finally* getting a ppp connection running from home to uni i
quickly ran into a new wall - a firewall that is. If we are *allowed*
to (and hypothetically if not), are we somehow able to
run a mail client (eg netscape mail) from home using the uts mail server?
I have tried just using mail.socs... as the server but this refuses to
work...
