This may be of interest to those of you who want to list an E-Mail
address next to your name in the Telecom White Pages.
This entry had appeared in the InformationAge - a publication of the
Australian Computer Society - on page 37 of the April '95 issue:
"People who spend more time communicating by E-Mail than by fax or phone
will value a service soon to be launced by Telecom Australia. The
carrier is about to become the first telephone company in the world to
list e-mail addresses in its White Pages telephone directories.
"We already list fax numbers in addition to telephone numbers, so adding
E-mail addresses is a natural extension of this service", says Warwick
James, national marketing manager, Telecom White Pages Directories.
Once in the directory, E-mail addresses are available worldwide as part
of International Directory Services. Anyone living overseas can obtain
an Australian E-mail address through their international operator at no cost.
Telecom has been hampered in its introduction of the new service because
its directories database currently uses "@nospam." as a command, preventing it
from being used in the listing. But Telecom is currently re-writing the
software.
An ACS member, Andrew Freeman, originally suggested the service to
Telecom and is the first person in Australia, perhaps the world, to have
his E-Mail address listed in a telephone directory service.
The ACS has taken steps to become the first organization to use the
service, and its national E-Mail address should appear in the next issue
of the Telecom White Pages.
According to James, E-Mail listings will not be widely available until
1996, at which time all 55 White Pages directories throughout Australia
will offer the service.
