The situation with my mailer (and the reason forthe amount of 'garbage'
in my replies) is :

- I'm on a VM (IBM) machine using a (the) mail program under OVVM

- Any mail received from the mail gateway (IBM<->Internet) has a
large header which is normally hidden by one's mailer. This is not
the case here (the only way for me to see the sender's address is
to search for the From: field of the header)

- When replying to mail, the reply is always at the bottom of the
mail, so the header would naturally be positioned between my comments
and the comments to which I am replying.

Although it should be posible to manually delete the lines comprising
the header before (while) replying to the mail, it is a great hassle
and time waster.

It's not in TFM, but I still think you should delete some of the stuff at
the bottom of the message Peter - somewhere between ftoomsh and VM it turns
to lots of garbage.
