It one thing to copy software for personal use, but its something completely
to stockpile copywrighted (spelling?) software and sell it for profit.

I see it as like accepting an extra $10 change from the cashier at the
supermarket compared to attempting to steal $1000's by another means. they're
both stealing but the scales are decidedly different.

I think this matter should be reported to the appropriate authorities (ie
the university AND the police).
