I use stevie, a vi clone for DOS. It's at
ftp://ftp.simtel.net/simtelnet/msdos/editor/stevi69x.zip

If you know how to use vi, this is probably ideal. I doubt it
impliments all the features of vi, but I didn't notice anything
missing when using it to try to get freedos working (I'm just going
to wait for the next release, I think)

The program is distributed under a license similar to GPL (less
restrictive), the source is available as stevi69s.zip, and the
executable zip is only 70k, so it might be a good idea to include this
in the FreeDOS distribution.
